Self Assessment is an annual tax return that most self-employed people and people with other sources of income must complete. It is a way of reporting your income and expenses to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and working out how much tax you owe.

The deadline for submitting your Self Assessment tax return is usually 31 January, but there are some exceptions. For example, if you are a high-income taxpayer, you may have to submit your return by 31 October.
